“Dillon” From Boys of Summer
Titus Brooks Heagins (MFA 2002)
Artist Statement I am a fine art documentary photographer. My artistic intent is to confront viewers in their personal spaces to move the position of “Otherness” closer to their normative construction of self. My photography continues to evolve as it interrogates the spaces of race, gender, sexual orientation, ageism, class, and religion. My images are deeply rooted in sensory experiences that manifest themselves in visual dialogs. These dialogs advocate for fairness and justice, and recognition for the humanity often overlooked or unseen in those communities photographed. Lastly, my images reacquaint us with the ordinary and at times familiarize us with those whom are unfamiliar. For a moment we become companions in distant journeys to unknown and secretive places.
