This course intro­duces stu­dents to a vari­ety of cre­ative work with clay through both hand-build­ing and wheel form­ing tech­niques. Stu­dents exper­i­ment with low, mid-range and high fir­ing tem­per­a­tures. Projects cover themes related to the ceramic objec­t’s rela­tion­ship to both paint­ing and sculp­ture, func­tional design, nar­ra­tive real­ism and his­tory, soci­ety and cul­ture. Prob­lem solv­ing assign­ments encour­age stu­dents’ indi­vid­ual aes­thetic devel­op­ment and inter­ests and their rela­tion­ship to con­tem­po­rary art and design prac­tices. Par­tic­i­pa­tion in group dis­cus­sions, cri­tiques and stu­dio processes is required. FRE­QUENCY OF OFFER­ING: This course is typ­i­cally offered in both the fall and win­ter terms of every aca­d­e­mic year, though sched­ul­ing may vary accord­ing to future term circumstances.
