Winter 2023

Prerequisites: All OF THE FOLLOWING: ARTDES 220: Second Year Studio.

Description: Expand your cultural learning as you engage collaboratively with a small team of international design students to develop a project that addresses a particular global challenge. You’ll work with peers based in Guadalajara, México in this interdisciplinary international virtual exchange studio. Our Winter 2023 partner institution is ITESO (Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente), part of the Jesuit university system, which emphasizes social justice and community engagement. Led by Kelly Murdoch-Kitt (Stamps) and Laura Maceira (ITESO), your team will learn to identify questions or problems of mutual interest and develop creative responses to them. Topics might include food waste, design with nature, water sustainability, gender issues, and others. You’ll learn creative methods for engaging in conversations about your selected topics, cultures, and differences. As you learn how to use visual thinking as an aid to collaborative creative work, you will improve your intercultural competencies, communication, and teamwork skills. It is up to your team to determine your creative outcome; however, these might include visual communications, prototypes, 4D (videos, films, podcasts), campaigns, products, branding, and clothing/wearables. Bilingual or multilingual outcomes are encouraged. (Although this course is offered in English, Spanish-speaking students are encouraged to enroll!)

Frequency: This course is offered occasionally in the winter term.
