Multi media artist, curator, and art critic Artur Żmijewski uses photography and film to explore displacement, societal trauma, power structures, “otherness,” and the line between fiction and documentary. Born in Warsaw in 1966, Żmijewski came of age in a time of Soviet-imposed communism. “I am intrigued by this space where the substance of life mixes with the synthesized world of art,” Żmijewski has written. One of the founding members of the art journal Czereja, Żmijewski serves as the artistic editor of Krytyka Polityczna, and directed the 7th Berlin Biennale. His career highlights include a fellowship at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam; receiving the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Per L’Arte prize; and numerous exhibitions around the world. Żmijewski’s films can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York; Neue Pinakothek in Munich; the Tate Modern in London; the Rubell Family Collection in Miami; Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw; Erste Bank Collection in Vienna; and the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris.

Presented in partnership with the the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies and the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (CREES).
