Michele Schara Residency Descriptions

Our 2016 residency cycle offers 2 types of residencies: Schara Residencies in the Brightmoor Maker Space and Schara Residencies in the Classroom.

Maker Space residents will have the unique opportunity to develop projects and programming as part of our ongoing Brightmoor Maker Space initiative in partnership with Detroit Community Schools.

Classroom residents work directly with teachers and K-12 students to integrate art and design into existing curriculums and school programs, while exposing youth to new skill sets, experiences, and ways of thinking.

Schara Residencies in the Brightmoor Maker Space at Detroit Community Schools

Schara Residency in the Brightmoor Maker Space (September 2016 - June 2017)

The Schara Residency at the Brightmoor Maker Space is an opportunity for a Detroit based artist or designer to be in residence in the Brightmoor Makerspace for the full academic year of Detroit Community Schools, September 2016 - June 2017. The resident will be located in the Brightmoor Maker Space and will be given the space and resources to design, develop, prototype, build, and implement new projects or products in a community context. The resident will be expected to incorporate teaching/leadership opportunities in the form of workshops or assistantships into their practice on average 6-8 hours per week by engaging with students at Detroit Community Schools and undergraduates at the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design through our Detroit Connections: Change by Design course.

Schara Summer Residency in the Brightmoor Maker Space (June - August 2016)

The Schara Summer Residency at the Brightmoor Maker Space is an opportunity to work on an art/design project that engages community, involves community production, and the development of art & design education practice for high school youth. The resident will be located in the Brightmoor Maker Space and will be given the space and resources to design, develop, prototype, build, and implement new projects or products in a community context. The resident will be expected to incorporate teaching/leadership opportunities in the form of workshops or assistantships into their practice approximately for 10 hours per week by engaging with students at Detroit Community Schools who are enrolled in hands-on summer programs.

Schara Artist / Designer in the Classroom Residencies

Schara In-Classroom residencies pair artists and designers with classroom teachers to incorporate art/design projects into the school day. Residents can engage with teachers and students from kindergarten through high school to integrate art and design into existing curriculums while exposing youth to new skill sets, experiences, and ways of thinking. Residents will work with partner teachers anywhere from 1 - 3 days per week in 1 - 2 hour sessions and are encouraged to think of this residency as an opportunity to work on a project of their own within a classroom context in a way that benefits both the artist/designer resident and the youth involved. The length of residencies are dependent on projects proposed but can last anywhere from 1 - 4 months.

Applicants will submit:

  • A detailed project description, including theoretical basis, proposed process, and a timeline
  • A proposed budget
  • Resume/C.V.
  • 5-10 examples of past work
  • Contact information for three professional references
  • A description of the ideal outcome of the residency, and a plan for publicly presenting / exhibiting / disseminating the work.
Eligibility
  • Applications are open to all, but Detroit-based artists/designers and University of Michigan alumni are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants for the year-long Schara Residency at the Brightmoor Maker Space must be artists/designers based in Detroit.
  • Applicants are encouraged to think of this residency as an opportunity to work on a project of their own within one of the Stamps School’s partner schools in a way that benefits both the artist/designer resident and the youth and community involved.
  • Candidates should be energetic and committed creative practitioners who are willing and able to share their skills and enthusiasm with U-M students and youth in Detroit.
  • Residents are expected to develop and complete a compelling project that engages with both U-M students and Detroit youth. Residents should have a concrete plan for the project and interactions with student groups including a developed project proposal, timeline, budget, and materials list. Stamps School staff and faculty will help chosen residents develop these plans in collaboration with our school partners.
  • Residents will have the opportunity to share their work publicly as part of the Stamps School’s programs and courses, and the process will be documented in order to build a collective resource for artists and teachers.
  • Experience facilitating projects with youth in a school or community context is helpful but not required.
  • Depending on the needs and timelines of particular projects, access to Stamps School facilities and studio spaces may be available.
Application Schedule

Application Schedule for academic year 2016 - 2017:

  • Applications go live – February 2016
  • Proposals Due – April 15, 2016
  • Selection Committee Review – April 2016
  • Selection Committee reviews materials and selects finalists to interview. Applicants will receive email notification.
  • Interviews (Skype or in-person) – April/May 2016
  • Notification – May 2016 (for residencies in Summer 2016/Fall 2016 / Winter 2017)

Selection Process

A committee of Stamps School faculty and staff review proposals after seeking input from teachers and administrators at partner schools.
