MFA in Art & Design
MDes in Integrative Design

 

MFA Application deadline: January 1, 2015

The admissions process for the MFA at Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design is highly selective. Approximately 10 new students join the program each year. Applicants must hold a bachelors degree (in any field), demonstrate the ability to carry out independent creative work, have a strong educational background along with an interest in interdisciplinary inquiry, and substantive life experience to draw on in charting new directions for creative practice.  Learn more about our MFA program here.

Stamps graduate programs are part of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, and admission to the Stamps School of Art & Design requires concurrent admission to Rackham. Application materials must be submitted to both Rackham and the Stamps School as outlined below.

A primary criterion for admission to the MFA program at the Stamps School of Art & Design is the assessment of the portfolio by our faculty. Graduate applicants will submit a portfolio of no more than 20 examples of recent work using Slideroom.

SlideRoom charges applicants a $10 transaction fee to submit a portfolio.

Applicants may upload images (jpg), video (mov, wmv, flv), music (mp3) or PDF documents. Video files must be under 60MB each - If you'd like to submit a larger file, upload it to Vimeo or YouTube, and submit the video's URL instead.

Decisions

After admissions materials are reviewed, top applications will be interviewed via video conference (Skype, Google Hangout, etc.) in mid-February. Final candidates will be determined after the interview process, and admission decisions will be announced mid-March.

We are seeking potential students from diverse backgrounds across the design disciplines (e.g. product designers, visual communication designers, user-experience designers, including industrial, graphic and interaction designers) that wish to transform their career path. It is critical that candidates already have specialized skills that they want to integrate with those of others to deliver design solutions for complex problems. We may also consider qualified candidates with education and experience related to the specific umbrella project where candidates have experienced design process in a professional setting, and wish to expand their knowledge of design while building on their prior education.

The admissions process for the MDes in Integrative Design is highly selective. Approximately 8 new students join the program each year.
