John Gutoskey: Queerly Beloved at Owens Community College

Queerly beloved

John Gutoskey (MFA 2014) will exhibit over 100 pieces of work in Queerly Beloved, a survey of 20 years of his assemblage work at Owens Community College’s Walter E. Terhune Gallery in Perrysburg, Ohio. The exhibition includes over 50 boxed assemblages made with found objects and vintage paper ephemera and 65 found object mandalas from The Mandala Project installed on the outside wall of the gallery. The works in the exhibit were made between 1995 and 2015.

Through a variety of media, including printmaking, found object, and assemblage, John Gutoskey explores concepts of identity and spirituality. Specifically, how they form, how they function, and how they are manifested in the 21st Century when one is perceived as queer”. Teaming with literary and historical references, popular imagery, and every-day objects (including toy and game pieces), John’s colorful and inventive works are topical and deeply personal, yet also accessible and broadly appealing.

John will give a talk to the public, including a preview of the exhibition, on Wednesday, October 7 at 10 am in the Center for Fine & Performing Arts at Owens Community College.

The exhibition opens October 8 with a reception beginning at 6:30 pm.
