Jim Cogwell: Silence Here and There
September 8 to October 12009
Slide Lecture: Wednesday, September 23, 3:30, Studio 11, Studio Angelico

The Siena Heights University Art Department will host Jim Cogswell’s exhibit Silence: Here and There,” from Sept. 8 — Oct. 1 in Klemm Gallery on the Adrian campus. The artist will conduct a lecture at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 23 in the Klemm Gallery.

According to the artist’s statement, Silence: Here and There” is an installation of large-scaled works celebrating the human search for knowledge of the cosmos, coinciding with the 2009 International Year of Astronomy. Cogswell currently is Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, and professor of Art at the School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan.

The work also acknowledges the dazzling distortions we impose upon the world when, in our efforts to see ourselves, as we are, here, we see ourselves everywhere else as well,” Cogswell said in his statement.

Two of the pieces to be shown are:

SILENCE, an 8‑by-18 foot painting and shelf-paper collage on seven paper panels, is a response to the anthropocentric beauty of 17th century star charts, which combined newly devised methods of visualizing the celestial orb with antique images of constellations, human-scaled characters and events devised to project visual order and meaningful scale onto the chaotic abundance of the heavens.

HERE, I AM, an 8‑by‑9 foot mixed media installation combining paper plates, steel cans, paint and vinyl, responds to contemporary scientific models of the vast molecular forces whose swirling explosions lead to the birth of stars.

The exhibit and the artist’s lecture are both free and open to the public.
