Janie Paul: “By the Light of Other Suns: Making Art in Prison”

Stamps Professor Janie Paul will present the talk By the Light of Other Suns: Making Art in Prison at the Institute for Humanities Common Room, Tuesday, March 15 at 12:30 pm. The talk is part of a campus wide collaboration with the Prison Creative Arts Project and visiting photographer and activist Mark Strandquist. 

Janie Paul is an artist and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art and Design. She moved to Michigan in 1995 to teach at the University of Michigan and began facilitating art workshops in prisons. She worked with Buzz Alexander to develop the Prison Creative Arts Project and in 1996 they organized the first Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners. Since then, she has been the Senior Curator of the yearly exhibitions. Currently she is working on a book about the art and the artists of the Annual Exhibitions.
