Emmer Berger: New Children’s Book Illustrated by A&D Senior

November 2, 2012

A&D senior Emmer Berger is the illustrator of a newly published Michigan children’s book called Butterfly Ears.

Emma was selected by author Carol Munro Guilbault of Rochester Hills to illustrate the story about a dog, Paco, who meets a beautiful Monarch butterfly, Mariah, on a Lake Superior beach. Paco’s large Papillon ears transform into butterfly wings and they begin a great Michigan adventure. The author explains, “I really wanted the book to be illustrated by a Michigander. I placed an ad on U of M’s Art and Design website for an illustrator. There were a dozen artists who responded. I gave the artists a photo of my dog, Paco, who is the main character in the book, and asked each to draw a sketch of what Paco would look like with butterfly ears. When I saw Emma Berger’s drawing, I knew she was the one to illustrate the story.”

Butterfly Ears is a great story for middle-elementary grade readers and a great “read to” story for early elementary children. The story includes some interesting Michigan facts and is a great tool for educators to use in teaching about Michigan. The author hopes parents will read the story with their children and be inspired to explore our great state and visit the beautiful locations Paco and the butterflies visited in the story. Butterfly Ears is available through Amazon and the website: http://www.ButterflyEars.com. Artist Emma Berger’s work can be seen at http://emma-berger.com and Paco can be followed on Facebook @Butterfly Ears Paco.
