Amy Zhong (BFA 2010) is a graduate student in the Art as Applied to Medicine program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Currently in the last semester of the program, she has been working closely with neuropsychiatrists at the Johns Hopkins Hospital on her thesis: a project that aims to improve existing antidepressant-prescribing algorithms and create a mobile web resource to accommodate the increasing role of non-psychiatry physicians in the field of mental health.

You may have heard of the term personalized medicine” where the use of an individual’s genetic make-up is used to guide treatment selection. Well, understanding pharmacodynamics is psychopharmacology’s attempt to personalize” medication. Which is why I created an app that will utilize a visual language to communicate these complex concepts in hopes to teach physicians about the relationship between pharmacological agents and drug side effect profiles, knowledge that is key to tailoring antidepressant medication to an individual.
