GOOD KIDS: The Play

“Something happened to Chloe after that party last Saturday night….”

GOOD KIDS is a new play by Naomi Iizuka, directed by UM Theatre Professor Gillian Eaton. Loosely based on the Steubenville High School rape case, GOOD KIDS is provocative, haunting and stunningly current.

The play runs from October 2 - October 12 at the Arthur Miller Theatre.

Professor Phoebe Gloeckner created the poster image.

Endi Poskovic Curates Exhibition in Detroit

September 29, 2014

The Detroit Artists Market is pleased to present Abstraction and Landscape: Contemporary Woodcut, a group exhibition of six international, national and local printmakers including Stamps alumna Amanda Lilleston (MFA 2012). Curated by Endi Poskovic, Professor of Art and Design at Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan, this dynamic, season-opening exhibition seeks to reveal the 19th-century Romantic landscape tradition of Northern Europe as the origin of modern abstraction, a premise set forth in the 1970s essays by renowned American art historian and professor, Robert Rosenblum (1927-2006). The artists in this exhibition explore themes of memory, the sublime, deity, transformation, revival, intimations of mortality, as well as ideas about nationality, displacement, and reconciliation. The exhibition includes groupings of large prints, individual prints, artists’ books, as well as a three-dimensional work suspended from above.

Abstraction and Landscape: Contemporary Woodcut coincides with the panel Abstraction and Landscape: Contemporary Woodcut organized and chaired by Endi Poskovic for Print City: Detroit 2014 (Sept. 24-27), the biennial conference of the Mid-America Print Council, held this year on the Wayne State University campus.

Heidi Kumao Exhibits & Lectures at Dlectricity

September 25, 2014

Heidi Kumao will be exhibiting her video installation, “Egress,” at Detroit Artists Market as part of Dlectricity on Friday & Saturday, Sept. 26 - 27, from 7 pm - midnight.

Kumao will speak about her piece Saturday, Sept. 27 at 6 pm at Detroit Artists Market.

In “Egress,” women stifled under an authoritarian regime reclaim self-determination by reading banned books to create their own reality from books’ - and even pages’ - physicality.

“Egress,” is a video projection onto a large stack of books and the wall behind it. The piece runs as a continuous video loop that is 6:30 min. and has an accompanying detailed sound track. Animated segments, live action video and collaged photos all fuse together to create the peculiar cityscape in which events unfold. Part shadow play, part documentary, part optical illusion, this “situated cinema” work uses visual storytelling to poetically frame political and historical events.
