Call for Proposals: Ofrenda Altar Installation

September 23, 2014

The Detroit Institute of Arts is inviting artists to submit proposals to create ofrendas for display in the museum from Oct. 24 to Nov. 2. An ofrenda (offering) is a collection of objects placed on an altar during the annual Mexican Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. An ofrenda is usually created for a person who has died and is intended to welcome him or her to the altar setting. The altars are traditionally decorated with ornate sugar skulls, flowers, favorite foods, mementos and pictures of the deceased. Contemporary ofrendas have been created as a way to pay homage to not only people but also places, moments in time, ideas and events that people feel are worth commemorating. -

Crushed Ivory Challenge

September 15, 2014

Elephant poaching is at its highest level in decades and it continues to rise. More than 35,000 elephant were killed in 2013 for the illegal ivory trade. These animals are being slaughtered across Africa to meet an insatiable global demand for ivory. Scores of the park rangers who work to protect them have also been killed.

We’re asking for your help in turning the crushed ivory into educational tools that can be distributed around the country. Through this pro-bono design challenge, you have the opportunity to create a compelling, thought provoking, informative and impactful display to increase awareness about our fight against illegal wildlife trade.
